John is truly an inspiration when it comes to homebrew jet engines. Not happy with simply using a turbocharger to make a thrust engine, he has successfully built and run a high power output shaft turbine to drive a motorcycle and a racing kart. His latest project involves combining pulse-jet technology with a power turbine to create a hybrid pulse jet driven turbo-prop. This video is his jet powered go Kart.

It looks like he has built a secondary turbine which drives a reduction gearbox. (last frames in vid can see this) The turbojet feeds exhaust through the secondary turbine which generates drive via the reduction gearing, hence a home built turboshaft engine using secondary recovery turbine and reduction gearing to drive axles. The small exhaust would reduce flow to secondary when slowing and at idle keeping EGT’s lower. Usable HP to be had with this setup.
Well done on an awesome project!

I’m looking at the last few frames, and I can’t tell whether you’re using just the thrust (I don’t think so, no nozzle on the exhaust), or some kind of compressed-air motor or secondary turbine to deliver shaft horsepower. Care to comment on how you’re developing forward motion from this engine?

What a little beaudy mate!!
It even looks well put together too!
The wave was a nice touch btw.. Please give us a run down on the tech would you?

I’m impressed.
The acceleration of both the cart and the bike are awesome.
Nice to have met the man as well.

John -
First heard of you in the yahoo DIY gas turbine builders group. (My member ID is TCGGrafix; although no post to date to the group.) You have been very much an inspiration to me. I have built my 3rd GT; this time a free power turbine design that I put on a kart. BTW love the turbine bike! Have a look at my video when you have the chance. Great job!

to think, back in the 30′s and early 40′s jet propulsion was mad science, if someone from back then saw this damn go-kart, they’d shit themselves.

You’re doing the country proud mate, keep up the good work, and I hope to see your jet go kart in action

Yep , kerosine …… or diesel

next time you should put this engine on a boat
Comment by JUKIO01 on 22 September 2007:
Hey, because it is a jet engine, does it need jet fuel? Like what commmercial aircrafts use?
Comment by stingaz001 on 24 September 2007:
yeah go the aussies im also one and i love wot we can do
